Kier Group is the second largest construction contractor in the UK, with revenues exceeding GBP5B. MYR has worked with Kier since 2008. To win this work, we needed to persuade supporting insurance companies of the value we would bring to minimizing professional risk and claims exposures.
In every major construction company in the UK and Australia, a considerable obligation and major risk is design and construction of a built environment. While design liability to the client rests with the contractor, it relies on a design supply chain to provide on time, safe and effective design to meet the clients' requirements on its behalf. The design management function is primarily responsible to coordinate management of this risk.
MYR has worked with Kier Group since 2008. We conducted an initial group wide review of its approach to managing all professional services risks and advised Kier on strategies for better managing these. As the world of construction has constantly evolved and Kier has rapidly grown through acquisition, we have supported Kier to adapt to a constantly changing environment, to assimilate different cultures, attitudes to working into the Kier Way.
We coordinate Kier's DMLT, which is the peak Group forum for managing design risk at Kier. Through this we work with the business evaluate critical risk, learn lessons, develop group wide standards for control and the tools to manage risk. We undertake audits against design management standards and control requirements for continuous improvement. We promote Kier's approach to risk management to its professional liability insurers so that its commitment, maturity and reputation for delivering design and construction projects is understood and appreciated by a critical stakeholder.
